Glucosamine, a natural substance that is found in the human body is a molecule of glucose (sugar) and amine (protein).Glucosamine is necessary for the formation, maintenance and repair of cartilage. It is normally found in bones, cartilage, tendons and connecting tissues. It is also present in the liver and kidneys. Commercially it is synthesized from shells of crustaceans. Glucosamine has been used for decades to treat arthritis and related problems. A lot of studies and research has been conducted on glucosamine and it has been found that it is effective especially in reducing pain and stimulating the production of new cartilage.
The Glucosamine Arthritis Intervention Trial was the first large scale, clinical trial conducted in the United States to determine the effectiveness of glucosamine and chondroitin in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis. The study showed that people who had taken glucosamine supplements experienced significant pain relief.
In studies conducted in Germany, glucosamine was proven to be more effective in alleviating pain and joints regeneration when compared to Non-Steroidal Anti Inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen. Glucosamine was also considered to be safe to treat arthritis as it did not have any side effects.
A clinical study on 178 Chinese osteoarthritis patients carried out in Beijing reported that glucosamine sulfate was effective in reducing pain. The patients were divided into two groups and one group received glucosamine sulfate while the other group received ibuprofen. After two weeks patients were examined and it was found that glucosamine had a stronger effect and was better tolerated.
Another synthesis of data from various studies revealed that glucosamine when administered orally through liquid form or through intravenous or intramuscular injections increased the flexibility of joints and enabled the patients to walk faster.
All the studies on the whole highlight the fact that glucosamine is very useful to treat arthritis problems. Apart from that glucosamine is also used in skin creams and lotions to make the skin smooth and resilient.
